Instagram Live coverage on the 2020 Texas Senate Election
The 2018 Senate race in Texas between Republican incumbent Ted Cruz, and Democratic nominee Beto O’Rourke was one of the tightest elections in the state in recent years.
For my coverage of the 2020 elections, my focus was on where the Texas voters moved on the spectrum compared to 2018.
While Texas shattered records for votes this election, over 11 million Texans cast a ballot in 2020, it looked like there could be a chance for the unthinkable to happen in the state, which was for it to turn blue, at least for Biden.
Ultimately, the Lone Star State remained Republican in the two most prominent races on Tuesday, with both President Trump and Senator John Cornyn winning their respective elections in the state.
As for my Instagram Live, I provided live updates as more voter numbers were being made public, and I was able to provide a quick comparison of the 2018 Senate election and that of 2020.
Back in 2018, Sen. Cruz defeated O’Rourke 50.9 percent to 48.3 percent, a margin of only 2.6 percent.
In 2020, however, that margin grew. As of Wednesday afternoon, with roughly 97 percent of the votes counted, Sen. Cornyn holds control of 53.6 percent of the votes compared to Hegar’s 43.7. The race was called late Tuesday evening.
